After months of, well, you understand, Will Smith returned with the trailer for Apple Original Films’ ‘Emancipation’ (directed and executive produced by Antoine Fuqua) which informs the victorious story of left servant Peter (Smith) counting on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his household to avert cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his mission for flexibility.

“I’ve constantly prevented making movies about slavery,” stated Smith in an interview with GQ.

“In the early part of my profession… I didn’t wish to reveal Black individuals because light. I wished to be a superhero. So I wished to portray Black quality together with my white equivalents. I wished to play functions that you would offer to Tom Cruise. And the very first time I considered it was Django. But I didn’t wish to make a slavery movie about revenge.”

‘Emancipation’ is influenced by the 1863 pictures of ‘Whipped Peter’ taken throughout a Union Army medical exam that initially appeared in Harper’s Weekly.

One image referred to as ‘The Scourged Back’ programs Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping provided by his enslavers, eventually added to growing public opposition to slavery.

The movie statement was made following an advance screening of “Emancipation” hosted with the NAACP throughout the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

There, Fuqua, Smith and Mary Elliott, manager of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, took part in a discussion about the movie moderated by politics and culture analyst Angela Rye.

‘Emancipation” premieres in theaters on December 2, 2022 and worldwide on Apple TELEVISION+ on December 9, 2022.
