Texans Say John Metchie III, Diagnosed W/ Cancer Last Yr, Could Be Ready Wk 1

John Metchie III is inching closer to playing football once again … Texans GM Nick Caserio states the young pass receiver, diagnosed with cancer in 2015, could be ready to pass week 1 next season!

Caserio signed up with SportsRadio 610 in Houston Wednesday early morning … where he offered an upgrade on the 22 years of age, 2nd-round draft choice, who missed his whole novice season since of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL).

“I’d say there’s a chance that he’ll be ready for the start of the offseason program,” Caserio stated. “I think there are still some things that he has to complete or go through. Quite frankly, it’s amazing what he’s done to this point.”

“He actually looks better now than he did when we drafted him in the spring,” Caserio stated. “He’s improved his strength, he’s improved his lower body strength. His attitude has been great, even though he’s been dealing with a lot of things medically.”

Metchie was diagnosed with APL — a blood cancer identified by a significant boost in a kind of leukocyte referred to as promyelocytes — last July, and invested last season combating the illness. Fortunately, physicians stated APL is the “most curable form of Leukemia.”

The Texans chosen Metchie in the 2nd round of the 2022 NFL draft … after he began for Nick Saban at Alabama. Metchie put together over 2,000 lawns and 14 goals in his last 2 seasons with the Crimson Tide.

During the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” effort previously this season, the Texans pass receivers, led by veteran Brandin Cooks, admired Metchie with custom cleats that check out “Metchie Strong” in honor of his battle versus cancer.
