Jada Pinkett Smith’s Majestically Melanated Docudrama ’African Queens: Njinga’ Shines In New Trailer

Netflix is getting where The Woman King ended with majestically melanated docuseries Woman Queen: Njinga that checks out the lives of popular and renowned African Queens.

Executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, the 4-part series starts with the life of Njinga–the complex, fascinating, and courageous 17th century warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba in modern Angola.

As the country’s initially female ruler, Njinga made a track record for her mix of political and diplomatic ability with military expertise while becoming an icon of resistance.

Interestingly, African Queens is a docudrama with the historic story of Queen Njinga re-created by star Adesuwa Oni and Pinkett Smith who wished to anchor a wonderfully grasping story in history.

“The problem with story is that often you wish to take innovative license and stretch concepts a bit, where I actually wished to have the ability to stay with the historic truths of each female. I simply seemed like that was necessary, particularly since these are stories that aren’t popular,” stated Pinkett Smith in an interview with Tudum.

“There’s great deals of historic literature around all the queens of England so, if you choose to extend their stories in informing a story, the pureness of their presence is at our fingertips. That’s not the case with Black African queens.”

With African Queens, Pinkett Smith wishes to link audiences to the courageous, fascinating queens who were most likely not part of their Western scholastic curriculum.

“This specific job went through various machinations, however it began with Willow… I actually wished to represent Black ladies,” stated Pinkett Smith.

“We put on’t typically get to see or hear stories about Black queens, which was actually crucial for me, along with for my child, and simply for my neighborhood to be able to understand those stories since there are lots of them!

The unfortunate part is that we put on’t have all set access to these historic ladies who were so effective and were the foundations of African countries.”

African Queens: Njinga premieres specifically on Netflix Feb. 15.
