Erick Sermon has voiced his issues in regards to the current state of hip-hop, disapproving of the prevailing tendencies that he deems inconsistent with the artwork type he performed a job in pioneering.

In a current interview with the Say Phrase! Podcast this week, the co-founder of EPMD didn’t mince phrases when expressing his views on the present state of the style.

“I just think that hip-hop is just not hip-hop,” he started. “I just think that they should change the name. No disrespect, but that’s not what that is […] Hip Hop can evolve, but this is not evolving. Evolving is Melle Mel to Rakim stage to the whole nine, to Wu-Tang [Clan] to Murder Inc., DMX — that’s evolving. Y’know, Cam’ron. Y’know, Dipset — that’s evolving.”

The legendary rapper continued to select names of artists who he felt pushed the tradition ahead and introduced originality to their sound, together with Soulja Boy and Ludacris.

However he doubled down on the state of the scene proper now: “Music is in somewhat of a bind because it’s stuck in one place.”

Sermon has room to speak too, with EPMD, he has left an indelible mark on the style. Recognized for his modern manufacturing type and distinct circulation, he performed a pivotal position in shaping the golden period of hip-hop. Sermon continues to affect and contribute to the tradition, leaving an enduring legacy.
